Fed Up Farmworkers Get Loud: 2 Ways to Back Them Up Right Now
And show Trump he can't walk all over American democracy
Farmworker unions are publicizing two big things right now: information about how to vote YES on California’s Prop 50 and the call to protect neighbors from ICE.
Both efforts are linked to human rights and social justice.
Union leaders are clear that they would work with a cooperative government, but they are not able to with this one. Prop 50 is the biggest hope they have for finding representation that is committed to due process, immigrant rights, and fulfilling their role as a check on Trump’s power.
Yesterday on CBS News, labor leader David Huerta stressed the importance of voting yes on California’s Prop 50, which would redraw political maps to favor Democrats as a response to the GOP’s gerrymandering in Texas and other states.
David Huerta, who was tackled, pepper sprayed, and arrested at a peaceful protest in California earlier this year said this:
I will not be silenced, and our community will not be silenced. And that is exactly what this is at moment in this time. People are using their voice, and they’re using their voice with this vote to vote yes on 50. And I think that’s exactly what this is coming down to… How people are responding to this vote right now is how they’re responding to this administration.
Judging by the NO KINGS march this month, it seems like a lot of Californians are not responding kindly to Trump, and are ready to send that message any way they can.
This month, The People United released a short film starring 95 year old legendary activist Dolores Huerta. The video shows community coming together to stop an ICE raid, giving diverse rationale and motivations for being a part of the protest against them.
Dolores Huerta explained their urgency in fighting ICE’s actions against farmworkers:
“This is not about going after immigrants. This is going after people of color. This is ethnic cleansing… And God knows we have to put a stop to it. We have never seen such horrific, horrific attacks on our people.”
Supporting these movements is simple enough.
If you are able, vote yes on Prop 50 in next week’s election, and spread the word about the importance of doing so.
And no matter where you live, be a part of your community that stands up when you see ICE victimizing immigrants and people of color.
With love and hope for the future,
Stephanie
